Mitochondrial - Gut Microbiota Crosstalk in Endurance Exercise

Paris-Redox-2020-Nuria Mach-Casellas

During Paris Redox 2020, Dr. Núria Mach from Université Paris-Saclay, INRAE, AgroParisTech, France, will highlight the role of Mitochondria, Oxidative Stress and Microbiota in exercise.

The title of his talk is "Mitochondrial - Gut Microbiota Crosstalk in Endurance Exercise".

The role mitochondria play during endurance exercise has been expanded beyond the scope of their energy-producing capacity and essential metabolic and cellular functions. Several lines of evidence suggest that mitochondria have a key role in ROS and RONS production and regulation of inflammasomes during endurance exercise. We are still in the infancy of deciphering the crosstalk between the mitochondria and gut microbiota, but literature shows that commensal gut microbiota molecules, such as N-butyrate, are essential for controlling mitochondrial oxidative stress and inflammatory responses, pathogen growth and adherence as well as in enhancing metabolism and energy expenditure in the gut during exercise.
