Regional fat distribution in women: The relation to metabolic hormones, risk markers and total anti-oxidant status

Jumana Saleh Paris Redox 2017Cardiovascular risk in postmenopausal women has been partly attributed to increased visceral fat accumulation. The team of Dr Saleh conducted a controlled study on healthy women exploring the relation of different fat distribution patterns with cardiovascular risk markers and serum anti-oxidation status Visceral fat was mainly predicted by retinol binding protein (RBP4) followed by insulin levels (p< 0.001). Subcutaneous fat was determined by insulin levels. The total antioxidant capacity (TAC) was significantly decreased in postmenopausal women. RBP4 was a major determinant of TAC (P=0.012). This study highlights the significance of RBP4 as a major metabolic risk marker linked to visceral fat accumulation and decreased serum anti-oxidant capacity in women.

During Paris Redox 2017, Dr Jumana Saleh from Sultan Qaboos University, Oman will present her recent study.
