The Opening Speech of Paris Redox 2022

Dr Helmut SiesIt was a great honor to have Prof. Helmut Sies present an opening speech on "Redox Medicine: Now and Tomorrow" at Paris Redox 2022 Congress! Prof. Sies explained about "The Role of Physiological Redox Signaling".

Coming from Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf in Germany, Prof. Sies is recognized as the "Redox Pioneer". He was the one who founded the concept of "Oxidative Stress".

In Paris Redox 2022 Prof. Sies discussed how as one of the reactive oxygen species (ROS), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a central physiological redox signaling molecule, targeting specific cysteines in proteins which act as molecular redox switches to activate transcription factors in defense against oxidative stress. Likewise, reactive sulfur species (RSS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS) exert regulatory roles in spatiotemporal control.

He covered that the current approaches in redox medicine include therapeutic prooxidants and therapeutic antioxidants which need more specificity and refinement. He added that future pharmacological approaches focus on stringently selective modulation of enzymatic oxidant sources and sinks, employing new tools in mechanistic studies and omics capabilities for targeted manipulation and delivery.
